Apr 19 – Want to get away? Space4Grace is just that—a three to four-hour soul get-away that offers participants a Sabbath experience in the midst of the pressures and stresses of life. It is a guided conversation among friends. Through sharing stories, struggles, and testimonies, we explore how God can transform our lives through the practice of Sabbath. Apr 28 – HEROES Care Training, Harbor UMC This training is primarily designed for Stephen Ministers wishing to acquire specific skills and knowledge that will help them care for military members, vets and their families. May 4 – 2018 Leadercast Event. Warner Temple AMEZ Church is excited to sponsor, once again, the 2018 Leadercast on Friday, May 4, 2018 from 8am to 4:30pm at the Bridge Church. The theme this year is “LEAD YOURSELF.” Join leaders from all over the Cape Fear area as they learn from some of the top To be the best leader of others, you first must learn to lead yourself well. May 6 – Cotton Patch Gospel – What if the Gospel of Matthew were to take place in rural Georgia not that many years ago? How would it be the same? How would it be different? With bluegrass music by the late Harry Chapin (“Taxi”, “Cats in the Cradle”), “Cotton Patch Gospel” stays true to the spirit of the Gospel story, while adding a lot of Southern charm, great emotion, and humor. Curtis Campbell, who plays Matthew (and over 30 other characters) is a retired United Methodist Pastor who has served several congregations in Wilmington and the surrounding area as Pastor and Music Director. He has been a soloist with the Cape Fear Chorale, Wilmington Symphony, and NC Symphony. This production, performed in various locations in NC and VA, brings the Gospel story alive in a new way! A love offering with be taken to defer costs of performance rights and any expenses of the group. June 13-14 – North Carolina Lay Servant Academy will be held PRIOR to Annual Conference in the Greenville Convention Center. To receive credit for the class you must attend both days. Cost is $25. For details on courses offered and to register click HERE

Aug 4 – Lay Servant Ministries Advanced Course “Leading Worship”
From 9am to 5pm @ Burgaw UMC. Lunch will be provided. Cost is $25 + cost of course book (scholarships are available. Registration for this course is not yet open. Save the date if you are interested. Course Description: This advanced course focuses on the ministry of the Lay Servant who either regularly or occasionally leads a group, class, organization, or the congregation in worship. Course book used is ““Leading Worship with United Methodists” by Hoyt Hickman. Topics include: basic resources for planning and leading worship; basic pattern of UM worship and its origins; how to renew and revitalize worship; effective leading of worship planning; and understanding the uniqueness of UM worship. This is one of the required courses for those pursuing Lay Speaking certification. Note: You do not need to take the Lay Servant Ministries Basic course before you take this course.
Aug 11 – C4C Summit This event will take place in the Raleigh area again this year and will include a number of informative and inspiring speakers. Details will be communicated once planning is finalized.

Sep 14 – District Fun & Fellowship Day For Clergy Please save the date. This will be a day for the pastors in the district to get together for some fun and fellowship. Details will be communicated once planning is finalized.

Oct 27 – Lay Servant Ministries Advanced Course “United Methodist Polity”
From 9am to 5pm @ Epworth UMC in Clinton. Lunch will be provided. Cost is $25 + cost of course book (scholarships are available. Registration for this course is not yet open. Save the date if you are interested. Course Description: Why does The United Methodist Church do things the way it does? And what does any of this have to do with trying to be a place and a people that embody the Kingdom of God? This course gives participants an overview of the structure and organization of The United Methodist Church. Course books used are ““Life Together in the United Methodist Connection (United Methodist Polity” by Thomas Frank and “the United Methodist Book Of Discipline. Topics include: understanding different types of sermons; finding the story and using the hymnal; reading the Bible aloud; communicating on paper and moving beyond it and sermon delivery skills. This is one of the required courses for those pursuing Lay Speaking certification. Note: You do not need to take the Lay Servant Ministries Basic course before you take this course.
LATE 2018 – The Lay Servant Ministries Basic Course will be offered in late 2018 (date not yet selected) Course Description: The Lay Servant “Basic Course” is intended to provide any person who is serving in (or considering serving in) a ministry within the United Methodist Church with the most essential and fundamental information that they should know as a United Methodist. This course is the foundation training for all the other courses in the Lay Servant Ministries program. It is meant to provide you with a solid foundation on which you can develop as an effective leader and servant in The United Methodist Church. This is one of the required courses for those pursuing Lay Speaking certification. Course will include the completion of a mandatory post class assignment. Topics Include:
- Overview of John Wesley & the formation of the Methodist movement
- The role of laity in the early days of Methodism
- Leadership roles (and tools) for today’s lay servant
- Recognizing God’s call in your life
- What is meant by the term “Spiritual Gifts”
- Explanation of what “Caring Ministries” involve
- Tips & techniques for effective communication
- Exploring evangelism, outreach & hospitality related ministries
- Spiritual formation/renewal
- Overview of Lay Servant Ministries program including Lay Speaker certification process

United Methodist Business Leaders Network – On Apr 4, 2018, several of our United Methodist Business Leaders Network members attended the Blue Ribbon Commission on the Prevention of Youth Violence (BRC) annual breakfast to learn about the BRC’s VOYAGE summer jobs program for at-risk youth. VOYAGE offers youth the opportunity to experience what it’s like to be a part of the local workforce. Youth are assigned to a company or organization that serves as a host job site. They are provided various life skills training and coaching throughout the process. The program has been very successful and is now in its third year. If your company or organiation is interested in learning more about serving as a host site please contact BRC Executive Director Jana Jones Halls at 910-508-2838.
