SOUL CARE Workshop
Clergy and laity representing 18 different churches in Harbor District attended the SOUL CARE Day Of Learning on Aug 5 at Harbor UMC. Facilitator and retired U.S. Amy Chaplain (Col.) David Smith led the training which was focused on equipping churches to start or expand ministries which reach out to those in the military community (active duty and vets). A round table session was also conducted which featured a panel of representative form local organizations which serve the military community. Follow on work will be done by the district’s Military Community Outreach Advisory Team (MCOAT). MCOAT’s mission is to equip and inspire churches in the Harbor District to share the love of Christ with military veterans and members through outreach, prayer, relationship building and acts of kindness and gratitude.
Congregations For Children (C4C) Summit
The 3rd Annual C4C Summit was held this past Saturday at Edenton UMC in Raleigh. Churches from across the conference sent representatives to learn, be inspired and celebrate their successes. The day included C4C training and presentations from various guest speakers on topics related to C4C’s mission. Two church’s from Harbor District (Seaside UMC and Harbor UMC) were featured via video testimonies of their success stories. Update on Racial Taboo Event
The Racial Taboo Event at Wesley Memorial UMC in Wilmington will be rescheduled to a date in the spring in order to coincide with some other community activities around race relations. That date as well as information about the other events will be advertised when known.
Mission of Hope
Harbor District’s designated international mission, the Mission Of Hope which serves the people Rotifunk in Sierra Leone Africa will be sending two mission teams to Rotifunk in the coming weeks. The first (leaving Aug 28) will be a medical mission team led by Dr. Sam Spicer of Grace UMC (Wilmington). This team will be working on upgrades to the operating room in the Rotifunk Hospital as well as organizing the hospitals pharmacy. The second team (leaving Sep 16) will be led by Dr. Dick Morrison of Wrightsville UMC and will focus on issues related to sustainability, community relations and education. Various types of help is needed to support this mission’s continued efforts in Rotifunk. Significant progress has been made over the past year and we want to keep the momentum going. Sep 2017 – Self Defense Class For Women
In September Harbor District, in partnership with St. Phillip AMEZ Church and the New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office will offer a “RAD” class for women wishing to learn self- defense techniques. The class will be taught by New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office Deputies who are certified RAD trainers. The class will take place on four Thurs evenings in Sep (7th,14th,21st and 28th) from 6pm to 9pm in the fellowship hall of St. Phillip AMEZ Church (2913 Acorn Branch Rd., Wilmington NC) – it’s by the airport. Sep 14 – United Methodist Business Leaders Network Summer Luncheon
On Sep 14, MHFC President and CEO Bruce Stanley and MHFC Board Chairman Joe Mann will be guest speakers at the UMBLN’s Fall Luncheon. Bruce and Joe will help us to better understand the history, structure and functions of the MHFC and share some things that you will likely find surprising. This is not a fund raising event. Conference Lay Leader, Gary Locklear, will also be with us and give a brief update on the conference’s Hurricane Matthew recovery efforts. Faith Harbor UMC in Topsail is sponsoring a resource fair for veterans on Nov 11 from 10am to 3pm at the Holly Ridge Community Center, Holly Ridge, NC. Organizations who provide support services to veterans in the community can set up an information booth at this event. Inspired by their desire to reach out to their neighbors in need and by their desire to engage in a ministry which provides long term benefits, the congregation of Whiteville United Methodist Church began building beds for children with such a need.
