Harbor District Youth Receives Youth Harry Denman Evangelism Award
The Commission on Evangelism awarded Hanna Berg of Wesley Memorial UMC, Wilmington the Youth Harry Denman Award on July 27 at Methodist University during ACS. The award, sponsored by The Foundation for Evangelism, honors United Methodists in each Annual Conference whose exceptional ministry of evangelism brings people into a life transforming relationship with Jesus Christ. Randy Evans, also of Harbor District, received the adult version of the award in June. Congratulations to both Hanna and Randy. Harbor District is proud of you. You serve as an example and inspiration to us all.
Project Agape Christmas Boxes
It that time of year again. Time to start thinking about packing and collecting Christmas Boxes for Project Agape. As in years past these boxes will be given to children in need living in Armenia. The deadline for drop off at the district drop off points is Sep 24th. Harbor District has three designated drop off points where you can take your church’s boxes.
- Epworth UMC (Clinton) – boxes can be dropped off anytime at the parsonage (Address is 32 Nathan Dudley Rd., Clinton) under the carport. If necessary you can contact pastor Dalma Cribb on 910-234-0682.
- Lake Waccamaw UMC – address is 506 Lake Shore Drive, Lake Waccamaw, NC. Please call pastor Chuck Smith to make arrangements on 910-499-1370
- Wrightsboro UMC – address is 3300 N Kerr Ave, Wilmington; church phone is (910) 762-2583. Drop off days & hours are: Monday – Thursday, 9am to 3pm; Friday, 9am to noon.

Aug 4 – Lay Servant Ministries Advanced Course – “Leading Worship”
Aug 4th from 9am to 5pm @ Burgaw UMC (110 E Bridgers St, Burgaw, NC)
Course Description: This advanced course focuses on the ministry of the Lay Servant who either regularly or occasionally leads a group, class, organization, or the congregation in worship. Course book used is “Leading Worship with United Methodists” by Hoyt Hickman. Topics include: basic resources for planning and leading worship; basic pattern of UM worship and its origins; how to renew and revitalize worship; effective leading of worship planning; and understanding the uniqueness of UM worship. This is one of the required courses for those pursuing Lay Speaking certification. For more details and to register click HERE.
Aug 11 – Congregations For Children Summit
If your church is currently involved in Congregations For Children (C4C), OR if you are simply interested in learning more about how to help children living in poverty, we encourage you to attend this year’s C4C Summit. The summit will take place Saturday, Aug 11th from 10am to 2pm at Edenton Street United Methodist Church (228 W. Edenton St. Raleigh, NC). The purpose of the summit is to inform, educate and inspire those involved in leading or participating in a C4C church/school partnership. Whether you are already involved in C4C or you are in the process of considering it for your church, you will find this event helpful. Aug 18 – District Set Up Meeting
Harbor District pastors and their Lay Leaders will gather for this year’s District Set Up meeting on Aug 18th at Lake Waccamaw UMC from 10am to 1pm.
Aug 28 – From Membership To Discipleship Workshop
This training event will be held in partnership with the Gateway District at Chestnut Street UMC (Lumberton) from 10am to 3:30pm. Pastors and laity leaders are encouraged to attend. The training will be led by Dr. Phil Maynard (UM pastor and congregational development consultant) and will cover the development of a discipleship system for your congregation. Phil’s work answers two fundamental questions: “What behaviors mark the lives of growing disciples?” and “How does the church provide the support and tools disciples need if they are growing toward maturity? ” For more information and to register click HERE
Sep 5th – United Methodist Business Leaders Network Breakfast
Please Save The Date! Our next event will be a breakfast on Weds. Sep 5th in Wilmington, NC. The focus will be on “Supporting Vocational Career Pathways For Local Youth.” We will have a chance to hear about some of the pathways available to local youth which can equip them with the skills and experience needed to succeed in the local workforce. We will also explore the ways in which local business leaders can support these efforts through options like offering: mentoring; apprenticeships; internships; job shadowing experiences; summer employment opportunities and permanent employment. Sep 14 – District Fun & Fellowship Day for Clergy – This will be a day for the pastors in the district to get together for some fun and fellowship. Details will be communicated once planning is finalized.
Sep 26-28 – Retired Pastors & Spouses Retreat – All retired pastors and spouses are invited to the Annual Retired Pastor’s Beach Retreat. As last year, it will be held at the Fort Caswell Beach Conference Center in Oak Island September 26 – 28. The guest speaker this year will be Bishop Will Willimon (probably the best known United Methodist Preacher in America). With a special musical guest Rev. Dr. Lily Chou (Concert Pianist and retired clergy within The NCCUMC). And what does any of this have to do with trying to be a place and a people that embody the Kingdom of God? This course gives participants an overview of the structure and organization of The United Methodist Church. Course books used are ““Life Together in the United Methodist Connection (United Methodist Polity” by Thomas Frank and “the United Methodist Book Of Discipline. Topics include: understanding different types of sermons; finding the story and using the hymnal; reading the Bible aloud; communicating on paper and moving beyond it and sermon delivery skills.
