2017 Annual Audits Due Soon
The due date for 2017 Annual Audits to be submitted is Aug 1st. If your church is receiving a new pastor the audit should be completed by Jul 1st. These audits are submitted via the conference Online Data Collection System. Many helpful audit resources can be found at the following link: https://nccumc.org/treasurer/training-materials/

Harbor District Disaster Response – Adopt A House Project Update
There have been several delays to beginning this project but it looks to be on track now. The conference has hired a construction coordinator who is based in Lumberton and will oversee our project. He and another conference disaster response staff person are in the process of assessing 8 possible homes with the goal of selecting the one we will “adopt” very soon. We appreciate your patience with this project. More details will be forthcoming as we get them.
2018 Harry Denman Evangelism Award
The prestigious Harry Denman Evangelism Award was presented to Randy Evans on Sunday, June 24 at St. Paul’s UMC in Carolina Beach. The award, sponsored by The Foundation for Evangelism, honors United Methodists in each Annual Conference whose exceptional ministry of evangelism brings people into a life transforming relationship with Jesus Christ. This year’s recipient, Randy Evans, is a member of St. Paul’s UMC in Harbor District. Randy leads a ministry which he started in April 2017 called Walking Tall (www.walkingtallwilmington.com) which focuses on building interpersonal relationships with persons living in poverty. Congrats Randy!
Jul 10th – Cyber Security Workshop
Do you have questions about how to make sure your church and personal computers (and other online devices) are as secure as they can be? In this day and age when so much of what we do is done over an internet connection, it’s wise to stay informed about how to best protect your information. On July 10th from 6:30pm to 7:30pm at Pine Valley UMC in Wilmington (3788 Shipyard Blvd), Harbor District will offer a cyber security training led by a New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office Detective who is a member of the FBI’s Cyber Security Task Force. July 19th – United Methodist Business Leaders Network Phone Event
On July 19th from 12 noon to 12:30pm the UMBLN will hold it’s next Phone Interview Event. We’ll be talking with bestselling business author, speaker and executive coach Larry Julian. Larry will be talking with us about some of the principles in his book “God Is My CEO: Following God’s Principles in a Bottom-Line World.” The book, which has been featured on CNN.com and in the Wall Street Journal explores the ten most common issues facing businesspeople today and applies God’s principles to these dilemmas. Larry explains that leading by faith isn’t just about feeling good—it’s about building employee morale, increasing productivity, and fostering customer loyalty. Aug 4 – Lay Servant Ministries Advanced Course – “Leading Worship”
Aug 4th from 9am to 5pm @ Burgaw UMC (110 E Bridgers St, Burgaw, NC)
Course Description: This advanced course focuses on the ministry of the Lay Servant who either regularly or occasionally leads a group, class, organization, or the congregation in worship. Course book used is “Leading Worship with United Methodists” by Hoyt Hickman. Topics include: basic resources for planning and leading worship; basic pattern of UM worship and its origins; how to renew and revitalize worship; effective leading of worship planning; and understanding the uniqueness of UM worship. Aug 11 – Congregations For Children Summit
If your church is currently involved in Congregations For Children (C4C), OR if you are simply interested in learning more about how to help children living in poverty, we encourage you to attend this year’s C4C Summit. The summit will take place Saturday, Aug 11th from 10am to 2pm at Edenton Street United Methodist Church (228 W. Edenton St. Raleigh, NC). The purpose of the summit is to inform, educate and inspire those involved in leading or participating in a C4C church/school partnership. Whether you are already involved in C4C or you are in the process of considering it for your church, you will find this event helpful. Registration is required. Aug 18 – District Set Up Meeting
This year’s District Set Up meeting will be held on Aug 18th at Lake Waccamaw UMC from 10am to 1pm. As in years past, we invite and encourage Lay Leaders to attend with their pastors. A variety of important information and updates will be covered. The event will also include worship and a lunch meal (served at noon).
Aug 28 – From Membership To Discipleship Workshop
This training event will be held in partnership with the Gateway District at Chestnut Street UMC (Lumberton) from 10am to 3:30pm. Pastors and laity leaders are encouraged to attend. The training will be led by Dr. Phil Maynard (UM pastor and congregational development consultant) and will cover the development of a discipleship system for your congregation. Phil’s work answers two fundamental questions: “What behaviors mark the lives of growing disciples?” and “How does the church provide the support and tools disciples need if they are growing toward maturity? ” For more information and to register click HERE

Sep 5th – United Methodist Business Leaders Network Breakfast
Please Save The Date! Our next event will be a breakfast on Weds. Sep 5th in Wilmington, NC. The focus will be on “Supporting Vocational Career Pathways For Local Youth.” We will have a chance to hear about some of the pathways available to local youth which can equip them with the skills and experience needed to succeed in the local workforce. We will also explore the ways in which local business leaders can support these efforts through options like offering: mentoring; apprenticeships; internships; job shadowing experiences; summer employment opportunities and permanent employment. Oct 27 – Lay Servant Ministries Advanced Course – “United Methodist Polity”
Oct 27th from 9am to 5pm @ Epworth UMC in Clinton (5876 Garland Hwy, Clinton, NC). Course Description: Why does The United Methodist Church do things the way it does? And what does any of this have to do with trying to be a place and a people that embody the Kingdom of God? This course gives participants an overview of the structure and organization of The United Methodist Church. Course books used are ““Life Together in the United Methodist Connection (United Methodist Polity” by Thomas Frank and “the United Methodist Book Of Discipline. Topics include: understanding different types of sermons; finding the story and using the hymnal; reading the Bible aloud; communicating on paper and moving beyond it and sermon delivery skills.
