In September Harbor District, in partnership with St. Phillip AMEZ Church and the New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office will offer a “RAD” class for women wishing to learn self- defense techniques.
The class will be taught by New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office Deputies who are certified RAD trainers.
The class will take place on four Thurs evenings in Sep (7th,14th,21st and 28th) from 6pm to 9pm in the fellowship hall of St. Phillip AMEZ Church (2913 Acorn Branch Rd., Wilmington NC) – it’s by the airport.
R.A.D. stands for Rape Aggression Defense and it is a self-defense class designed especially for women. RAD training is offered to women all over the U.S. through a network of over 11,000 RAD instructors. The New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office teaches the RAD class to women in all sorts of settings (businesses, churches, women’s groups, local school district teachers, college students etc.)
Even though it’s a serious subject, the instructors make the class fun, interactive and enjoyable. You will feel empowered. In addition to learning some very valuable skills, you will also have a chance to meet and fellowship with some of the ladies from St. Phillip AMEZ Church – who will also be taking the class. This is just one of the things that we are doing in partnership with our AMEZ brothers and sisters in Harbor District.

Note: This class is free. Spots are limited and we expect the class to fill up fast. Spots will be assigned on a “first to register” basis. Women who take this class often sign up with a friend or family member, but many also come on their own. Instructors are sensitive to physical limitations so don’t let that deter you. They’ve even had a women on an oxygen tank take this class before.
