The April 2022 Mission Trip team, consisting of Board members Donna Hudson, Amy Sessions, Carlee Cash, Ivan White, and St. Paul’s Carolina Beach UMC outreach director Gayle Tabor, left for Sierra Leone on Tuesday, April 11th. Read the Summer 2022 Newsletter to see what the team accomplished.
Mission Reinforced Need for Universal Anesthesia Machine
Today the Hatfield-Archer Memorial Hospital in Rotifunk can only do surgeries using spinal anesthetics with the patients awake during the procedure. While this works for C-Sections, appendectomies, and hernia repairs, it is inadequate for other life-saving surgeries. Complex operations are referred to hospitals hours away from Rotifunk.
The Mission of Hope has set a goal to raise $24,000 to purchase a Universal Anesthesia Machine (UAM) to greatly expand the hospital’s surgical services. Amy Sessions reviews how the Gradian UAM will benefit the Rotifunk community. In a related story, Nurse Anesthetist Emmanuel Margo explains how he will use the UAM to save the lives of women and children.
Gradian Universal Anesthesia Machine (UAM)
The Gradian UAM has a built-in oxygen concentrator and battery backup if the hospital’s power supply fails. It is designed to deliver general anesthesia safely in any setting, especially in low-resource hospitals such as Rotifunk. Its replaceable parts and accessories are easily accessible.
