Located in downtown Wilmington (New Hanover County), Mother Hubbard’s Cupboard serves those who are hungry in the Wilmington area through distribution of emergency food. This service is provided by volunteers in partnership with the community, without regard to race or religion and with care to preserve the dignity of the individuals being served. Hungry individuals or families may come to Mother Hubbard’s Cupboard to receive a 3-5 day supply of groceries. Clients self-declare their need for food and do not need to show ID.
During COVID, operation and hours are changed. Clients with cars are served in their cars. Those coming on foot are served outside the door. As of July 2021, masks are still in use for clients and workers.
Current hours of operation are 12:30-3:30 on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Volunteers serve from Noon until 4pm on those days.
Volunteers are needed who are able to lift 35 pounds and work an entire 4 hour shift. Training is needed even for those who previously volunteered, since things have changed greatly. Additional shifts, who take in and sort produce, are available on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons. Other teams work during the week as well.
